There's a version of this story where a film about a boy, his dog, and a jealous cat doesn't matter very much. A comedy, AI-animated, a little rough around the edges — the kind of thing that could easily get lost in a feed and scrolled past.
Then you find out who made it, and the film stops being the story. The person behind it is.
Karthikraj works as a sanitation worker in Rajapalayam, Malayadipatti, in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district. He's also a graduate. And for months, after his shifts ended, he sat down with nothing but a laptop and AI animation tools and built a full-length film from scratch — writing it, directing it, designing it, editing it, almost entirely on his own, under the name 2k Tamilan Karthik Raj. The result is Super Dog & Super Cat, a Tamil-language comedy about a boy whose life is upended by a robbery, the tiny puppy who becomes his unlikely protector, and a house cat who's decided there isn't room in this home for both kinds of love.
We're not going to pretend the film looks like it came out of a studio with a nine-figure budget — it doesn't, and Karthikraj would probably be the first to tell you that. The animation is a little uneven in places. The pacing shows its first-timer seams. This is, by his own account, a first attempt at a medium that didn't even exist in its current form a couple of years ago.
But that's exactly the point.
A door that used to be shut is starting to open
For as long as filmmaking has existed, telling a story on screen required things most people simply don't have access to: cameras, studios, animation teams, years of formal training, and — more than anything — money. AI tools are quietly rewriting that equation. They don't remove the need for talent, vision, or an absurd amount of persistence. What they remove is the gatekeeping. A sanitation worker in Rajapalayam can now sit down after a full day's work and build something that, five years ago, would have needed a production house behind it.
Karthikraj did exactly that. Not because it was easy, but because — by every account of the people around him — he simply didn't stop.
Why Shortflix said yes
This is precisely the kind of filmmaker Shortflix wants on its platform.
Big studios and polished VFX houses will always have their place. But somewhere between "no platform will look at a first-time AI film" and "quality has to be flawless before anyone gets a chance" is a huge amount of genuine talent that never gets to show up at all. Shortflix's decision to release Super Dog & Super Cat is a deliberate one: to be the platform that backs first-generation AI filmmakers while they're still finding their footing — not after they've already made it elsewhere.
The quality will get sharper. It always does, with the second film, and the third. What matters right now is that someone with a full-time job and no film-industry connections had a story to tell, taught himself the tools to tell it, and finished the thing. Shortflix's job is to make sure that effort has somewhere to land.
If you're an aspiring filmmaker sitting on an AI-made short or feature, gathering dust because you weren't sure anyone would take it seriously — this is your sign. Shortflix is actively looking to platform more work like Karthikraj's.
